(Atlantic, IA) — It was a warm night but it did not deter a large field from coming to Atlantic High School to compete in their Cross Country Invitational. Lincoln Pius X took the team title on the boys and girls races while Tri Center’s Haven Weers won the boys race and Glenwood’s Grace Berglund dominated the girls side.
Berglund won with a time of 18:48.1 and finished 50 seconds ahead of 2nd place Ava Hope of Winterset at 19:38.7. Lily Miller of Treynor was third (19:55.8), Nora Ivanov of Pius X 4th (20:09.4) and Klaira Sander of the Thunderbolts (Pius X) was 5th (20:11.0).
Julia Heslink of Harlan was 8th (20:17.8); Taylor Heithoff of Kuemper Catholic 10th (20:28.5); Ashlyn Rau of Harlan 11th (20:28.6); Reese Strunk of Creston 14th (20:57.6).
Gabrielle Engler had the best finish for Atlantic in 19th (21:46.9); Lucy Northwick 26th (22:24.4); Kaitlyn Hickman 33rd (22:45.1); Cambry Van Ert 60th (24:04.2); and Alika Anderson 68th (24:41.4). Ximena Mendez Cordero was 69th and Saige Coffman finished 80th.
Reese Dittmer of Tri Center was 40th (22:52.7) and Azlyn Clark of Riverside finished 43rd (23:00.07). There were 106 runners in the girls race.
Pius X won the girls team standings with 31 points; Treynor 2nd with 87; Winterset 3rd with 108; Harlan 4th with 110; Creston 5th at 134 and Atlantic 6th with 188 points.
Weers won the boys race with a time of 16:27.3 and was about 9 seconds ahead of Emmanuel Grass of Red Oak at 16:38.0. Mason Betts of Atlantic ran a strong race in third place at 16:56.0 and finished just 2 seconds ahead of Jeffrey Gross of Harlan (16:58.0). Evan Lillie of CBAL was 5th at 17:09.0 and Aiden Gaul of St. Albert was 6th (17:10.3). Gabe Winkelmann finished in 7th place (17:14.4) with Jackson Walter of St. Albert in 8th; Henry Vrooman of Pius X in 9th and Owen Fenner of Riverside in 10th (17:17.4).
Lincoln Pius X won the team standings with 115 points and Riverside was 2nd with 135. Nodaway Valley was third with 150, Denison Schleswig won the tiebreaker over St. Albert for 4th at 199. Creston was 8th (213), Harlan 10th (247), Kuemper Catholic 11th (249), Glenwood 12th (249), Red Oak 13th (254) and Atlantic 15th (278).
Also for the Bulldogs, Cruz Jaquez 20th (17:52.6), Eli Hudnall 21st (17:53.1), Trig Drahota 29th (18:12.1), and Nolan Burbridge 55th (19:00.6).
Besides Betts, Thomas Engler was 52nd (18:56.1), Gage Schroeder 69th (19:20.4), Deklyn Kinney 72nd (19:30.6) and Kouper Kinney 82nd (19:53.5). Caleb Andersen was 84th and Bentley Staiert 98th.
For the Wolverines, Paul Kading finished 32nd (18:18.7), Haden Colton 34th (18:23.2), Josh Nelson 37th (18:30.7), and Luke Kading 40th (18:39.3).
For the Cyclones, Erik Heslink 15th (17:38.2), Brogan Schechinger (18:07.5), Nathan Sandquist 87th (20:03,8), and Ramsey Hussing 115th.
