(Lewis) Recent flooding in parts of Iowa has raised questions about how to properly dispose of debris and hazardous materials left behind by floodwaters.
John Lorenzen with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says the DNR partners with local communities, and the best way to find out what to do in a specific situation is to contact the DNR Field Office in your area.
In southwest Iowa, the DNR Field Office can be reached at 712-243-1934.
Lorenzen says flood debris should be sorted into five categories: household hazardous waste, including paints, solvents, and chemicals; appliances and electronics; scrap metal; general garbage; and vegetative waste.
Lorenzen encourages anyone affected by flooding this past week to visit the DNR Disaster Assistance webpage for more information or contact the DNR Field Office 4 in Atlantic with questions about disposing of flood debris.
