(Ashburn, VA) — Former Iowa Hawkeye Kicker Drew Stevens has won the starting job with the NFL Washington Commanders. The team released veteran Jake Moody on Monday giving Stevens — an undrafted rookie free agent signee the full time job.
The two players were pretty even during the first part of training camp but last week, Moody had some tough practices while Stevens stayed consistent. In Washington’s first pre season game against Miami, Stevens made both of his kicks — a 41 yard field goal and an extra point. Moody made both of his kicks as well — a 29 yard field goal and an extra point — but the field goal hit the upright and doinked in.
Moody was signed by Washington off of the Chicago Bears practice squad in November of last year — the former Michigan Wolverine was with three different teams last season — the Commanders, Bears and started 2025 with San Francisco, who he kicked for in 2023 and 2024.
Washington is looking for consistency at the kicker position after using three different players last season — Moody, Matt Gay and Matthew Wright.
At the University of Iowa, Stevens scored 352 career points (124 PAT, 76 FG), which ranks second in school history. He went 76-of-95 in field goals and 124-of-126 in PAT conversions and set school records for total field goals made (76), most 50+ yard field goals (12), and longest field goal (58 yards). His 76 made field goals ranks 4th in Big Ten history.
