(Pottawattamie Co.) The Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed July 13-17 as Rural Road Safety Awareness Week, encouraging residents to help make rural roads safer for everyone who travels them.
This year’s theme, “The Rural Modes,” highlights the many ways people navigate rural roads, whether by car, truck, motorcycle, bicycle, farm equipment or on foot.

Supervisor Tim Wichman read the proclamation during Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting. The proclamation notes that, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 39,254 people were killed in traffic crashes across the United States in 2024.
The proclamation notes that rural roads present unique challenges, including higher speeds, longer travel distances, curves, unpaved roads and limited access to trauma centers. It encourages everyone to share the road, follow traffic laws and slow down near emergency responders. The proclamation also recognizes the efforts of transportation, law enforcement and emergency agencies to improve safety and urges residents to commit to safe travel on rural roads.
