(Sioux City, IA) — Logan Magnolia’s baseball team is trying to get back to the state tournament but they must get by #6 Remsen St. Mary’s in the Substate Finals tonight, coverage on KSOM.
Last year, the Panthers were able to knock off Coon Rapids Bayard 3-1 before falling in the first round at Merchants Park to Saint Ansgar. If Lo Ma will make a return trip to Carroll, they will have to do it without their ace Macklin Loftus. The sophomore threw 105 pitches in a one hit shutout over Woodbine but that means the pitch count rule prevents his throwing tonight. Head Coach Kurtis Hinkel says he has a number of different options to pitch against the Hawks
8th grader Mason Van Iten is tied with Loftus with 11 appearances — he has four starts and a 3.11 ERA. 8th grader Gus Lapke has 8 appearances and a 2.30 ERA — Hinkel says there are six guys he could turn to as a starter.
Offensively, the Panthers like to run with 194 stolen bases. Sophomore Cale Cunard leads the way with the bats hitting .424, 1 HR, 31 RBI. Junior Brodie Davis is batting .397 and leads the team with 34 stolen bases. Hinkel says they have gotten production from hitters one through 9
Remsen St. Mary’s is looking to go to the state baseball tournament for the 19th time — the won a title in 2023 and were runners up in 2024. The Hawks are led by Sophomore Dalton Klein who is hitting .435, 2 HR, 23 RBI and on the mound has dominated, only allowing 6 ER all season, an ERA of 0.74 with 85 strikeouts in 56 2/3 innings pitched. He only threw 63 pitches in the district final win over MMCRU and should be Remsen St. Mary’s starter. Hinkel says they will have to find a way to make contact
Logan Magnolia is 25-5, Remsen St. Mary’s is 20-6, first pitch is at 5 pm tonight, coverage on 96.5 FM KSOM.
