(Underwood, IA) — Gavin Sisson and Colton Schneider combined on a 1 hit shutout as Harlan got their 20th win of the season beating Underwood 2-0 on Wednesday night.
Sisson had a no hitter going until Coltin Johnson broke it up with a leadoff single in the bottom of the 5th. Head Coach Heath Stein then went to his shut down closer in Schneider who retired the only six batters he faced with three strikeouts to earn his 4th save of the season.
Harlan scored first in the top of the first when Foxx Argotsinger led off the game with a double to right. After Schneider flied out, Harrison Kjergaard singled up the middle and Argotsinger stopped at third. With Cade Nelson at the plate, Kjergaard took off for 2nd and Underwood decided to make a play there but Kjergaard beat it and that allowed Argotsinger to score to make it 1-0 Cyclones.
It stayed that way until the top of the 5th. The Eagles starter Johnson allowed 3 hits in the first two innings but Harlan did not get a hit the rest of the game. They had baserunners in every inning because of walks, errors or hit batters but could not score until Barrett Kaufman reach on an error to lead off the 5th and Johnson suffered from some wildness — three wild pitches would eventually Kaufman in to score to make it 2-0.
That was enough for Sisson who retired the first 7 batters he faced. He walked Owen Fletcher with one out in the 3rd and after Johnson struck out, Hudson Ross reached on an error but Sisson got Ryker Adair to pop out. Sisson then retired the next 6 in a row until Johnson broke up the no hitter. Schneider then came in and shut the door on the Eagles as Harlan improved to 20-7.
It was the final regular season game for Underwood and they finish 20-4 — their playoffs begin July 7 against either Tri Center or Clarinda.
