(Edwards AFB, CA) — An Iowa native is among those killed in a B-52 bomber crash in California. Maj. Brad Hovey was a 2009 graduate of Adel-Desoto-Minburn High School. The 35-year-old graduated from Iowa State in 2014 with a degree in aerospace engineering. He went on to become a pilot with the 419th Flight Test Squadron at Edwards Air Force Base. Eight people were killed during takeoff from Edwards during a routine test mission on Monday. The FTC suit alleges the World Professional Association for Transgender Health made false claims regarding the safety, effectiveness, and necessity of medical transition surgeries and drugs, including puberty blockers and hormones. The lawsuit seeks to require the organization to only make recommendations based on peer-reviewed medical and scientific evidence. Joining the FTC lawsuit are Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird and the attorneys general of Nebraska, Texas, and Alaska.
Urbandale Businessman Pleases Guilty To PPP Loan, Bankruptcy Fraud
(Urbandale, IA) — An Urbandale businessman pleaded guilty to making false statements on a loan application. Federal prosecutors say 57-year-old Henry Schappert was operating a business Allied Exteriors in May 2021 when he overinflated its income, payroll, and number of employees on a PPP loan application. U.S. Bank then approved a more than 265-thousand-dollar loan. Schappert was also charged with making false declarations while filing for bankruptcy three years later, and pleaded guilty. Schappert faces up to 35 years in prison when he is sentenced in October.

Musco [[ MUSS-coh ]] Lighting of Oskaloosa has been named the official lighting provider for the games. This isn’t the first time the company has been involved in the Olympics. (Prairie City, IA) — A rare white bison born in May in Central Iowa, has died. The Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge in Prairie City made the announcement today. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and its partners are investigating the circumstances surrounding the calf’s death. Experts say the chances of a bison born white in color are one in a million.
