(Audubon Co.) The Audubon County Board of Supervisors has taken the first step toward establishing a Reserve Deputy program for the Sheriff’s Office.
During Tuesday’s meeting, Audubon County Sheriff Todd Johnson explained the proposal was prompted by the availability of a longtime part-time, as-needed deputy. Johnson said the individual has assisted the Sheriff’s Office for years but reduced his availability while working a full-time law enforcement position, two additional part-time law enforcement jobs, and operating a private business. Now retired from his full-time position, the deputy has indicated he is willing to return in an as-needed capacity.
Johnson told the Board the Reserve Deputy program would provide the Sheriff’s Office with additional staffing flexibility when needed.
The Supervisors agreed the program is a good idea, noting it would not create any additional cost for the county.
The Board approved publication of the notice for the first public hearing on the proposed ordinance establishing the Reserve Deputy program. Sheriff Johnson said an ordinance will be drafted, which will need to go through three readings, with the first reading tentatively scheduled for June 23.
