(Des Moines) The National Weather Service says Iowa could see two rounds of thunderstorms on Wednesday, with the potential for strong winds, large hail, heavy rainfall, and even tornadoes.
Forecasters say the first round of storms is expected Wednesday morning. Confidence is high that storms will develop, although there is less certainty regarding their intensity. The primary threat from the morning storms will be strong wind gusts. The greatest risk during this period is expected to be across northern Iowa.
A second round of storms may develop Wednesday afternoon. Meteorologists say there is uncertainty about whether storms will redevelop, but if they do, they could become severe. Potential hazards include large hail, damaging wind gusts, heavy rainfall, and isolated tornadoes.
Afternoon and evening storm chances extend across much of Iowa, with southeastern Iowa expected to have the greatest potential for severe weather.
Residents are encouraged to monitor forecasts and be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions throughout the day Wednesday.
