(NAFB) The New World screwworm has crossed the border from Mexico to Texas and New Mexico, Teresa Steckly, a beef cattle specialist with the University of Illinois, says cattle producers in the Midwest and other areas farther north should stay watchful, but do not need to worry.
“The only time that I would get excited would be if producers from Illinois would bring cattle up from along the border in Texas. I don’t see that happening; that is a completely different breed of cattle. We have our Angus, Simmental, and black-hided cattle up here primarily. So right now, I am not worried about the New World screwworm in Illinois.”
Cattle producers are urged to visit the USDA’s screwworm.gov website for more information.
