(Griswold, IA) — Last week, Griswold’s Sophomore Ella Gade (Gay-Dee) set a new school record in the discus, throwing it 122 feet, 5 inches and broke a record that stood for over 50 years. Gade beat her previous best throw by 14 feet 3 inches and says staying mentally focused was important for her
She says she really did not do anything different when she made the record throw, it just all came together
Gade has come a long way in a short amount of time — she only started throwing in 8th grade when her friends convinced her to go for track and field. She says that the sport took some time to grow on her
She loves the discus now — she also throws the shot put but has not seen as much success there although its coming. The previous school record at Griswold in the discus was 116-04 so Gade not only broke it but she shattered it. The record had stood for 53 years until Gade broke it and now she is the #1 seed going into regionals this Thursday and her throw currently ranks 5th in Class 1A. But Gade does not want to get ahead of herself and is smartly taking things one step at a time
Griswold will be going to Fremont Mills High School this Thursday for the state qualifying meet; field events start at 4 pm. We will have reports throughout the evening on the state qualifying meets on KSOM.
