(Waukee, IA) — Former Nodaway Valley Cross Country Head Coach Darrell Burmeister will be inducted into the Iowa Association of Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame this year. Burmeister was the coach of the Wolverines dating back to the late 1970s — he had five team cross country state titles, three individual champions, 23 all state runners and had a team or individual qualify for the state meet for 27 consecutive years. Burmeister says it is a complicated process to be selected by the IATC
Burmeister remembers going to multiple USA coaching clinics and he credits his runners for being motivated and he says there was always competition in practice which is essential to success. At the state meet held every year in Fort Dodge, he says you cannot win the race early but you can lose it
Burmeister says he worked hard to get Nodaway Valley on the map in cross country
This is not the first Hall of Fame honor for Burmeister — he is also in the Iowa High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame for Basketball with 603 career wins at Nodaway Valley.
Burmeister is currently still coaching — he is at Waukee High School and coaches the Distance Runners on the Track team. His induction ceremony to the IATC Hall of Fame will be this December — others inducted include athletes Thomas Pollard of Gilbert, Nick Efkamp of Madrid, Calvin Davis of Iowa City High and Alyssa Pfadenhauer of Danville.
