(Atlantic) A group of Cass County Democrats got an early start on Earth Day by tackling a cleanup effort along Bull Creek, spanning 14th to 17th Streets.
On Tuesday, April 14, despite muggy conditions, dense vegetation, and steep embankments, the team covered the entire three-block stretch, collecting a pickup truck bed full of plastic and other debris.
More cleanup days are planned in the coming weeks, and community members are encouraged to lend a hand if they happen to see the group at work.
Bull Creek is essentially a small urban creek/drainage stream. Like many creeks in southwest Iowa, it carries stormwater runoff and natural drainage through town.
According to the City of Atlantic, Bull Creek winds its way through residential areas of Atlantic, passing near schools and neighborhoods while linking local parks and trail systems. As it continues beyond town, the creek becomes part of a larger watershed that ultimately feeds into regional river systems. One of the most visible and frequently used sections is along the Bull Creek Pathway, a paved trail that follows the creek and connects multiple recreational areas.
Beyond its role in drainage, the Bull Creek corridor serves as an important part of the community’s outdoor space. The pathway provides opportunities for walking and biking, while nearby parks and green spaces offer places for recreation and relaxation. The creek and its surrounding vegetation also create a natural habitat for wildlife within the city, adding to its environmental and scenic value.
