(Washington D.C.) — The SAVE American Act is being debated on the floor of the United States Senate and Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley spoke in support of it this week. Grassley is a co sponsor of the bill that ensures only U.S. citizens are registered to vote in federal elections and it also requires photo ID when voting.
Grassley went on to say that Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate found 277 noncitizens registered to vote in the state and 35 of which actually casted ballots in 2024. Grassley pointed out that even a handful of votes can matter — Iowa’s 2nd congressional district came down to a margin of six votes with six votes with Mariannette Miller-Meeks winning in the last election.
Opponents of the act say it could block or discourage voters from participating and it could create new barriers to voting registration.
The SAVE America Act passed the House of Representatives in February of this year; it failed to meet the 60 vote threshold by the Senate in March but proponents have pushed back to the floor.
