(Des Moines) Iowa House District #23 Representative Ray Sorensen outlined HF2748 titled the “Iowa Farm Bill”. The Greenfield Representative says the bill focuses on cutting red tape and helping farmers stay competitive.
Sorensen says the bill, expands tax relief for retired farmers leasing land, repeals a small but costly grain tax (saving about $1.4 million annually), improves efficiency for dairy by increasing milk hauling weight limits, expands property tax exemptions for certain farm storage tanks, and adds Hemp to Ag Tourism. He says bottom line: less government burden, and more flexibility for Iowa farmers.
Additionally, Representative Sorensen says this week, the House advanced improvements to the Teach Iowa Scholar program aimed at addressing teacher shortages across the state.
Updates include expanding eligibility by removing the top 25% class rank requirement, prioritizing awards for special education teachers, and directing support toward rural school districts facing workforce challenges.
Sorensen says these changes help focus resources where they’re needed most—getting more qualified teachers into hard-to-fill classrooms and supporting schools that are struggling to recruit. He says the goal is simple: strengthen Iowa’s teacher pipeline and ensure every student has access to a quality education.
Sorensen noted a major court ruling this week upheld key portions of Iowa law regarding:
• Age-appropriate materials in schools
• Parental notification policies
• Classroom instruction boundaries
