(Des Moines) Griswold Republican Representative Tom Moore is seeking re-election to the Iowa House for District 18. Moore submitted his nomination papers and affidavit of candidacy on Monday as he begins his campaign for another term.
If re-elected, it would mark Moore’s seventh election and his second representing the newly drawn District 18, which includes Cass County, Montgomery County, and most of Page County.
Moore says it has been an honor to serve in the Iowa Legislature over the past 10 years and hopes to continue working on behalf of residents in District 18.
Moore says he is especially proud of his work on education policy. He says he has consistently advocated for increased school funding, adding that while lawmakers don’t always approve the full amount he requests, he continues pushing for what he believes is adequate funding for schools.
Moore also notes that he was the first legislator to introduce a proposal to eliminate Iowa’s inheritance tax.
Moore says the biggest challenge before the Iowa Legislature this session is property tax reform. Moore says he would like to see something done, but it is a complicated issue. He says the House has a plan, the Senate has its plan, and the Governor has her plan, and none of them are the same.
Tom Moore is a former educator. He taught history and physical education and coached for 33 years at Grinnell and Griswold Community Schools. He followed that career with 8 years as Assistant Manager at Southwest Iowa Egg Cooperative.
Tom is a member of the Iowa High School Athletic Association Officials Hall of Fame with 38 years of wrestling officiating, including 25 years in the state tournament. He has also worked girls’ softball for 25 years, including 9 years in the state tournament.
