(Lewis) This past shotgun season, hunters harvested 100,000 deer across the state of Iowa. John Lorenzen, appearing on the DNR Report this week, broke down those numbers in six area counties.
Lorenzen says in Cass County, Hunters harvested 298 deer, 200 were antlered deer, 204 in Audubon County, 115 of them antlered deer, Shelby County, 142 deer, 101 antlered, Pottawattamie County, 520 deer harvested, 332 antlered, Montgomery County, 316 deer harvested, and 199 antlered, and in Adair County, 658 deer harvested, 307 were antlered bucks.
Lorenzen says the Excess Tag January Antlerless deer season runs through January 25. This season is open only to counties with leftover antlerless tags. In this case, it would be Adair and Guthrie Counties.
Lorenzen says a unique thing about this season is that the method of taking is broad. Hunters can use bows, muzzleloaders, handguns, shotguns, crossbows, rifles, .223-caliber rifles, and larger.
