(Des Moines) Snow showers and snow squalls are expected today, with possible impacts to both the morning and evening commutes.
Narrow bands of intense snow squalls may produce near-blizzard conditions, leading to significant travel disruptions. While not everyone will see snow, those who do could experience brief periods of whiteout conditions. Drivers should be prepared for rapid changes in road conditions, with visibility potentially dropping from normal to near whiteout in a short time.
Jim Lee, Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Des Moines, says the forecast is for bands of snow showers or snow squalls to set up during the day, from late morning through sunset.
Jim Lee says this is not a normal snowstorm, when one can predict a 50- or 100-mile-wide swath of snow. Many of these snow squalls may only be a few miles across. Lee says trying to pin down where these bands of snow might be located is currently beyond their science.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for portions of northwest, west central, central, and north central Iowa, including the counties of Crawford, Carroll, Audubon, and Guthrie from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
