(Lewis) There is a significant change from the traditional way of going to a campground and not knowing a site’s availability.
In 2021, the DNR began a pilot project to assess the success of 100-percent reservable sites at Maquoketa Caves State Park. This project was a success, and the reservable sites received positive feedback.
In the last five years, 16 additional campgrounds have transitioned to 100 percent reservable sites, and the remaining state park campgrounds will make the switch for the 2026 camping season.
John Lorenzen from the DNR office in Lewis says one thing to note is that two rustic campgrounds will remain walk-in only: Preparation Canyon in the Pisgah area and Fort Defiance in Estherville.
Lorenzen says some significant benefits are knowing immediately what is available before you leave your house. Now, you can make your reservation online or by phone with a credit card, so no exact cash is needed, and if cancellations occur, other campers can see that and reserve that spot within minutes.
