(Atlantic) Atlantic standout Gavin McLaren signed a National Letter of Intent to play football for South Dakota State University on early signing day on Wednesday morning.
McLaren has 254 carries for 1,850 yards through his career. The SDSU Coaching staff recruited McLaren (6’2, 245) as a fullback, a rare position in college football today. McLaren played fullback in Atlantic’s “I” formation set. Although McLaren lands in the top ten family of total career rushing yards at Atlantic, his blocking might be most impressive.
McLaren says he always dreamed of playing at the Division I level. McLaren’s athletic talents extend beyond the football field—he also excels in basketball, track, and baseball. He credits his coaches for guiding him throughout his journey to playing Division I football.
McLaren says the bond with the SDSU Coaching staff, players, facilities, and the championship environment sold him.
McLaren credits his work ethic to his family, including his older brother Jackson, for their support through his high school career.
Gavin’s father, Josh, says Gavin’s signing is humbling to his family and credits all of the coaches who have helped his son along the way.
Atlantic Football Coach Joe Brummer says Gavin was a great player. He played four years at the varsity level and was a three-year starter for the program.
South Dakota State University, located in Brookings, competes at the Division I level as a member of the Missouri Valley Conference. The Jack Rabbits finished with a 7-1 conference and a 12-3 overall record.
The other conference members include North Dakota, South Dakota, Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Youngstown, Southern Illinois, and Northern Iowa.
