(Des Moines, IA) — The Iowa High School State Track and Field meet wrapped up its competition on Saturday with some memorable moments. None bigger than Quentin Nauman of Epworth Western Dubuque who set two all-time Iowa records in one day — Saturday morning he became the first Iowan to run a sub 1:50 800 with a time of 1:49.41 to take home gold and in the afternoon broke the all time Iowa record in the 1600 at 3:59.60.
AC/GC had a strong Saturday as the boys shuttle hurdle team of Morgun Nolte, Tate Fever, Tommy Skram and Brexton Schneider won a state title going under a minute at 59.94. The Chargers had been disqualified in last year’s state tournament in this race and earlier this year they lost Senior Jathan South to a broken leg. Schneider said that when South went down the team was demoralized
The Chargers relays also got 3rd place in the Sprint Medley; 3rd in the 4×100 and 3rd in the 4×400 on Saturday. For the girls, Ava Campbell was 5th in the 1500 and 6th in the 800.
Gabe Funk of Lenox had won the 400 Hurdles on Friday and Saturday he got the win in the 110 Hurdles repeating his finish from a year ago but he says it was tougher this year
Atlantic finished with one medal at this year’s state meet and it was the Boys 4×100 relay team on Saturday that got a 7th place finish with Senior Jarrett Hansen, Sophomore Ethan McNeal, Freshman Zander Killion and Senior Tye Houser who had to overcome injuries to run anchor
Harlan’s Lindsey Sonderman ran her last races as a Cyclone, finishing 2nd in the 800 and 3rd in a fast 1500
She will be heading to UNI in the fall.
AHSTW’s Luke Sternberg ran his final race as a Viking finishing in 5th in the 200 meters with a PR. He says running on Saturday made it a big moment for him
Other highlights from Saturday
The 1A girls shuttle hurdle relay was a fast race with Griswold 5th at 1:08.25; CAM finishing 4th at 1:08.09; Fremont Mills 2nd at 1:04.75 with Lana Alley diving across the finish line but not ahead of the Vikequeens of Stanton who took first at 1:04.69 which was a state meet record with Kylie Hart, Lauren Johnson, Lauren Roberts and Hannah Olson. Olson was also 2nd in the 100 Hurdles.
Ada Hansen won three medals on the day — besides the shuttle, the sophomore was 4th in the 100 Hurdles and was part of the Sprint Medley relay that was 2nd.
William Anderson of Logan Magnolia was 1st in the 100 finals and 4th in the 200.
Riverside boys 4×400 was 2nd place and the Bulldogs girls 4×400 finished third.
Treynor swept the 2A Shuttle Hurdle relays — the boys won with a state meet record of 57.66. The Cardinals Boys 4×100 got even faster than the prelims and won with a new state meet record of 42.09. Cauy Konz won the individual 200 and was 2nd in the 100. Brady Wallace capped off his Drake Relays win the 110 Hurdles with a state title as well.
And Lili Denton led St. Albert to the Class 1A girls team title as she was 2nd in the 800 behind Kadence Huck of Nashua Plainfield but beat her in the 1500 — Denton scored 38 of the team’s 46 points.
Finally, Saturday’s attendance at the state meet set a new day three record of 10.667. Overall, the three days were the most ever for the state meet at 40,820 breaking the previous mark of 40,567 in 2023.
