(Greenfield, IA) — In a Pride of Iowa Conference Doubleheader on Friday night, Izzy Eisbach led Nodaway Valley to a blowout win over #13 Martensdale St. Mary’s 73-47. In the boys game, the Blue Devils rallied to beat the Wolverines 56-45 in OT.
The girls game was one sided from the beginning — Nodaway Valley first went inside to Emma Boswell who had 7 points in the first quarter. Eisbach also had 7 points in the opening quarter and took over the game from there finishing with 37 points which is right at her average. MSM struggled to deal with the Wolverines press and turned it over multiple times, especially in the first half. Boswell finished with 15 and Abigail Nelson had 15 for NV as they improved to 2-1.
Kathryn Ballard and Rylie Fugate each had 13 points for MSM as they fell to 4-2. The Blue Devils 2nd leading scorer Carly Franey fell to the floor and hit her head — although she did return to the game, she did not play the entire 2nd half.
The boys game was a slugfest with a lot of fouls and pour shooting on both sides. MSM led 12-7 after the first quarter but the Blue Devils had just 2 points in the 2nd quarter and Nodaway Valley took a 18-14 lead at the half.
Nodaway Valley built a 13 point lead in the third quarter thanks to two threes from Jack Berg and Ty Rardin had 9 points in the quarter. Colton Wright was able held the Blue Devils cut the lead to 33-25 going to the 4th.
Martensdale St. Mary’s slowly and methodically worked their way back in the game — Jack Gavin had 6 points in the quarter and the Blue Devils were 6-7 from the free throw line in the quarter. The Wolverines lead evaporated largely thanks to a full court press which forced turnovers. NV led 45-38 with about 2 minutes left but MSM came all the way back to tie the game at 45-45 to force overtime.
MSM had not hit a three pointer all night long until Jack Rezac hit one to start the OT and then Gavin took over with 8 straight points — the Blue Devils outscored the Wolverines 11-0 in the extra period and ran away with the win.
Colton Wright led Martensdale St. Mary’s (3-2) with 20 points, Jack Gavin had 17, all but 2 coming after halftime.
Nodaway Valley (1-2) was led by Ty Rardin with 24 points while Jack Berg added 10.
