(Atlantic) The Atlantic wrestling team concluded a strong season with six state qualifiers and two medalists. The Trojans posted an impressive 18-3 dual record and secured a spot in the Regional Dual Tournament. They defeated Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont in the semifinals before falling to Winterset in the Regional Final. In conference competition, Atlantic finished as the Hawkeye Ten Conference Dual runner-up, suffering their only conference loss in a close 35-34 match against Lewis Central.
Atlantic Head Coach Tim Duff highlighted the Trojans’ strength as a tournament team, emphasizing their consistent effort in competition. He noted that the team competed hard most weekends. The Trojans showcased their talent at the Joe Fitch Tournament in Humboldt, securing a runner-up finish with six individual champions.
The Trojans continued their strong season with a seventh-place finish at the Council Bluffs Classic, matching their highest placement in program history. Evan Sorensen led the way, claiming the individual title in the heavyweight division. In Atlantic’s ten-year history competing at this tournament, Sorensen became only the second Trojan wrestler to earn an individual championship. The team also showcased its dominance by securing the title at the highly competitive Rollin Dyer Tournament.
Atlantic claimed four individual titles and secured the team championship at the John J. Harris Wrestling Tournament. They capped off the regular season in dominant fashion, winning the Hawkeye Ten Conference title while crowning four individual champions.
In the postseason, the Trojans built on their success with a runner-up finish at the district tournament, advancing six wrestlers to the state tournament, including three individual champions. Two of the six state qualifiers earned state medals—Aiden Smith, a four-time state medalist, secured third place, while Evan Sorensen, a three-time state qualifier, finished fourth.
