(Ames, IA) — Iowa St. men’s basketball will not have Christian Wiggins available for the 2026-27 season. Head Coach TJ Otzelberger has announced on Cyclone Fanatic on X that the incoming freshman tore his Achilles in practice in late June. Otzelberger says that he has already had successful surgery and will be able to resume basketball activities at this time next year.
Wiggins is a 4 star recruit and a 6’3″ shooting guard from Minneapolis, MN — as a senior at Wayzata High School, he averaged 21.4 points, 8.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.6 steals per game and was named Mr. Basketball in Minnesota.
Otzelberger had said that Wiggins could be in the backcourt mix for ISU this season even as a freshman. Killyan Toure and Jamarion Batemon return for Iowa St. and Jaquan Johnson — a transfer from Bradley — is likely a starter.
Another incoming freshman — Yusef Gray from Milwaukee suffered a labrum injury during his senior season and his status is uncertain for ISU going into the season. With injuries already a factor, the minutes could increase for incoming transfers Leon Bond III from Northern Iowa and Ryan Prather from Robert Morris.
