(Lewis) This might be a good time for anglers to dip a line in the water. John Lorenzen, fisheries biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says fishing has been good for the last couple of weeks, with multiple reports coming in from several area lakes.
Lorenzen says anglers report successful fishing trips at Prairie Rose, Lake Anita, and Viking Lake. He says bass are biting at Viking Lake.
Lorenzen says anglers reported catching their limit of bluegill at Prairie Rose.
Lorenzen says the report from Lake Anita is equally impressive, with reports from two anglers catching keeper-sized 20 crappies and 45 bluegills in 3.5 hours.
Lorenzen says numerous factors play into a successful fishing trip. Fish that are spawning are more susceptible, and species in warmer water are often easier to catch, particularly after ice out and weather fronts move through. Lorenzen says there is an old saying, “When winds come from the east, the fish bite the least.” He says the bottom line is that a steady weather pattern brings the best fishing.
