(Atlantic) The Atlantic’s softball team scored seven runs in the fourth inning and secured a 13-1 victory. This win was a comeback from their previous 10-5 loss to the Saints on June 11 at St. Albert.
Riley Wood, the pitcher for the Trojans, earned the win, allowing just one run on five hits. She struck out five batters and walked none in her four innings of work. Wood’s record for the season now stands at 12-7. The Trojans scored 13 runs on eight hits, ending the game after the fourth inning.
Makenna Shroeder hit a double, and Peyton McLaren hit a triple, helping the Trojans take a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Kylie Wesack, Lily Barnes, and Kierra Hochstein answered for the Saints in the top of the second inning, with Wesack scoring a run for the Saints, narrowing the gap to 3-1.
The Trojans then scored four runs in the bottom of the second on two hits, taking advantage of two errors by St. Albert and extending their lead to 7-1. Lila Weiderstein showcased her strength and speed by hitting a deep ball and getting a triple, which was her fourth of the season. The sophomore catcher added rwo singles bringing her total hits for the season to 67, the most in Class 3A.
The Trojans sealed their victory in the bottom of the fourth inning by scoring six runs on four hits. Riley Wood hit a double, and Wiederstein, Zoey Kirchhoff, and Jillian Saathoff also got hits. Claire Pellett’s bunt resulted in the final two runs, ending the game in four innings.
Katelynn Hendricks led St. Albert offensively, hitting a single and a double.
With this win, the Trojans extended their record to 23-12 overall and 13-4 in conference play, putting them just one game behind Creston and two games behind the league-leading Clarinda Cardinals. St. Albert’s record now stands at 10-14 overall and 7-9 in Conference Play.
