Iowa Cyclosporiasis Cases Up To 226 This Year
(Des Moines, IA) — The number of Cyclosporiasis cases reported in Iowa is now 226. Iowa Health and Human Services says that’s about 150 cases more than this time last year. So far this year, cases have been reported in 48 Iowa counties. The CDC says there have been more than 67-hundred cases of laboratory-confirmed domestic Cyclospora in the U.S. since May 1, but more than 11-thousand additional cases have not been confirmed in a lab or need further investigation. Iowa HHS recommends rinsing all produce and cooking it to at least 158 degrees to avoid the Cyclospora parasite.
Iowa On Track To Close Housing Shortage By 2028
(Des Moines, IA) — Iowa is on track to close its housing shortage. A Common Sense Institute study shows Iowa ranks the eighth most affordable nationally based on monthly mortgage costs. However, a typical purchase now requires over 40-percent more income than the average household earns. The study forecasts the state will close the gap on its housing shortage by the end of 2028.
Iowa Sees Expansion Of Drought and Near-Drought
(Des Moines, IA) — Drought and near-drought conditions are expanding in Iowa. This week’s National Drought Monitor Map shows an increase in moderate drought in Western and Northwest Iowa. There’s also an expansion of abnormally dry conditions in Central, Southeast, and Eastern Iowa. The current map shows about 54 percent of Iowa is drought-free. That’s down from 64-percent last week.
Iowa State Fair Has 18 “Healthy Choices” Options For 2026
(Des Moines, IA) — There are 200 food stands at the Iowa State Fair, and 50 foods on a stick. It may not be the easiest place to eat light, but the fair does have a list of 18 healthy choices for fairgoers. They include a BLT or a PB&J—both on a stick, caramel apple slices, as well as a shrimp corndog, which is deep-fried with a sweet jalapeno glaze. There’s also a salad on a stick included on the list of options that are healthy, at least for the state fair.
11th Annual Hinterland Festival In St. Charles Through The Weekend
(St Charles, IA) — The 11th annual Hinterland Music Festival is underway in St. Charles, bringing dozens of performers to Iowa. Headliners include KATSEYE, Lorde, Mumford & Sons, and Kali Uchis. Festival organizers have expanded the venue in recent years, adding a new permanent stage and 130 acres of additional space to accommodate growing crowds. Hinterland runs through Sunday.
