(Undated) A recent CDC update revealed three people in Iowa have fallen ill from cucumbers sold by Fresh Start Produce Sale Inc. It also reported that five people in Minnesota were affected by the cucumbers. The affected cucumbers were sold in 14 states between May 17th and 21st, not including Iowa and Minnesota. The outbreak has resulted in 162 cases across 25 states, with 54 hospitalizations reported but no fatalities. The symptoms of the illness can appear within six hours to six days of consumption, with most individuals recovering within a week without medical intervention.
Salmonella infection is a common bacterial disease that affects the intestinal tract. Salmonella bacteria typically live in animal and human intestines. People become infected most frequently through contaminated water or food.
Some people with salmonella infection have no symptoms. Most people develop diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps within 8 to 72 hours after exposure. Most healthy people recover without specific treatment within a few days to a week.
In some cases, diarrhea can cause severe dehydration and require prompt medical attention. If the infection spreads beyond the intestines, life-threatening complications may also develop. Traveling to countries without clean drinking water and proper sewage disposal increases the risk of getting salmonella infection.
