(Iowa City, IA) – The Hawkeyes gave the sold-out Carver-Hawkeye Arena crowd a performance for their money as they upset #20 Wisconsin in overtime 88-86. This is the first win for Iowa against a ranked opponent this season. Iowa is now 14-11 on the season and sits at 7-8 in Big Ten action.
Iowa had their first lead of the game in the second half at 49-47 with just two minutes into the second half of the game. The Badgers were able to continue to hold on to the defensive end and forced the game into overtime. When the game was tied at 86-86, the Hawkeyes earned a stop and got a timeout with under ten seconds remaining as Tony Perkins drove to the hoop, scoring with 1.3 seconds left, and earned the win for Iowa.
Speaking of Tony Perkins, he had 18 points on the night, shooting 6-16 from the field, and earned four rebounds on the night. 16 of Perkins’s points were scored in the second half and overtime periods. The leading scorer for Iowa was freshman Owen Freeman who earned his fifth double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds while also dishing out a career-high six assists on the night. Payton Sandfort shot 5-10 from the field while earning 18 points and had one steal. Josh Dix was the last double-digit scorer with 17 points and five rebounds while whipping out two assists.
Wisconsin was led on the night by Steven Crowl with 22 points and six rebounds while shooting 11-13 from the charity stripe on the night. AJ Storr knocked in 21 points behind Crowl’s 22, knocked down 8 buckets, and snagged four rebounds. Chucky Hepburn shot 6-11 from the field in 41 minutes of action while also coming up just short of a double-double with nine rebounds. Tyler Wahl shot 5-8 from the hardwood and knocked in 10 points.
Wisconsin shot just 47.6% from the field while Iowa shot 52.6% from the field. Wisconsin led in three-point shooting at 43.8% while Ioaw shot 28.6% from beyond the arc. The Hawkeyes outrebounded the Badgers 35-32 while Wisconsin outscored Iowa 46-34 in the paint.
Iowa jumps back to the floor this Tuesday, February 20th when they take on Michigan State on the road at 6:00 p.m.
