(Ann Arbor, MI)- The #2 Iowa Hawkeyes traveled #12 Michigan Wolverines who come and punch them in the mouth in front of the Ann Arbor home crowd. The top ranked Hawkeyes would suffer a tough loss to the Wolverines 24-11 as the upset would come to a surprise to Iowa fans as Michigan would win SIX STRAIGHT matches to start the dual. The big match for the Wolverines would be freshman Sergio Lemley ranked 19th at 141lbs who took on the number one at 141lbs, Real Woods for the Hawks…and won. Not only won, but won handedly with a 14-2 major decision victory.
Michael Caliendo would be the first Hawkeye to notch a win on the night as he would take a 9-4 decision over Michigan’s Beau Mantanona. Only other two Iowa wrestlers would earn wins with Aiden Riggs winning 5-4 at 184lbs and Zach Glazier at 197lbs with a major decision victory. This was the first non-Penn State loss in the Big Ten for Iowa in six years.
The Hawkeyes get a chance to bounce back as they take on the No. 1 Penn State Nittany Lions in Iowa City for the Pioneer Showdown on Friday, February 9th starting at 8pm.
