(Elk Horn, IA) – In a back-and-forth battle, the #9 CAM Cougars ended up with a major win over conference opponent Exira-EHK 67-55. The Spartans were able to keep with the Cougars all game long, especially after halftime, as they were down by just seven, but the forced turnovers gave CAM the scoring advantages to take the victory. CAM Head Coach Joe Wollum was proud to take a win in Elk Horn.
The game leader on the night was Eva Steffensen who put down 26 points, 17 of which came in the second half of action. Steffensen continued to put pressure on the Spartans in the paint all night long.
CAM also relied on Carley Dennis as she put down eight crucial points, and utilized her speed and agility on the defensive side of the hardwood.
Also scoring on the night for the Cougars were Meredith Rich with 13 points, Emma Follmann with 12, and Kiera Nichols had eight, as every starter for the Cougars scored in the game tonight.
Exira-EHK was led in the game by Taryn Petersen with 19 points while Jaelynn Petersen was right behind her with 16 points. The Spartans also capitalized on a few buckets by Harlee Fahn with seven points, while Kadence Sporrer had six. Finishing off scoring for the Spartans was Mayne Jorgensen with five and senior Hannah Nelson with two points to finish off the night. Head Coach Tom Petersen talked about how they played lackadaisically and how they need to get ready for more basketball down the line.
The Spartans will have a quick turnaround when they face off against Lenox tomorrow with a game coming up in less than 24 hours. They’ll be at Lenox for a 3:00 p.m. tipoff, a game that they know they are ready for.
For the Cougars, they’ll have the weekend to rest and will take on Ar-We-Va for their senior night on Monday.
The Cougars are now 18-2 (13-2) overall while Exira-EHK dropped to 13-6 (11-4) on the season.
