(Atlantic) Atlantic swept Red Oak in a Hawkeye Ten Conference doubleheader, 11-0, and 11-0, on Thursday night. Atlantic Head Coach Terry Hinzmann used three pitchers, and all three had solid performances.
“Our pitchers did a fantastic job, said Hinzmann. “Peyton McLaren and Riley Wood pitched no-hitters in the first game, and Zoey Kirchhoff tossed a three-hit shutout in game two. The defense played solidly, with maybe one or two errors the entire night. We worked hard on this the past few days in practice.”
The big hit in the first game came from Lila Wiederstein. The freshman belted the walk-off home run to seal the 11-0 victory. Wiederstein added an RBI double to her game-one resume’. Nearly everyone in the Trojans lineup scored in the first game.
The Trojans continued more of the same in the nightcap. Claire Schroder led the team offensively with a single, a triple, and an RBI. “Our hitters showed patience at the plate and waited for their pitch to hit,” said Hinzmann. “We have been preaching this since day one, and I think we got better at that during the season.
“The improvement has much to do with the games we play against ranked 4A and 5A teams,” said Coach Hinzman. “Up and down the line-up, it’s paying dividends as we get into the latter part of the season and post-season.”
The Trojans cap off the week at home against Lewis Central tonight and Denison-Schleswig on Monday.
