(Des Moines) An Iowa zoo has been cited for a “critical violation” in the death of a snow monkey in 2022. Documents from the USDA say an eight-year-old Japanese snow monkey named Nico underwent a dental procedure last year and was placed on an electric heating pad for around three hours. The pad caused a “large, gangrenous wound.” Nico did not recover from the injury and was put down less than two weeks later. The USDA says the zoo’s veterinarian staff’s failure to monitor Nico’s condition led to his death.
