(Atlantic) Three candidates are running in the Republican June 7 Primary election for Cass County Attorney. Incumbent Vanessa Strazdas, challengers Jay Mez and Robert Engler.
Candidates addressed the topic during Monday’s candidate’s forum on KS95.7 and video streamed on westerniowatoday.com. Where do you put sentencing on drug cases-rehab first or suspended sentence?
Vanessa Strazdas said rehab and suspended sentences frequently go hand in hand. She says there are different tiers involving drug offenses. One is possession of drugs on a person or having drugs on a person intending to sell them. She says the people selling the drugs are more of a concern to her than those using them for personal use.
Jay Mez agrees that suspended sentences and treatments go hand-in-hand. He did add he’s in favor of self-treatment; having a suspended sentence hanging over a user’s head serves as a motivator to work hard to get the needed treatment.
Robert Engler says do you have a user or do you have a drug dealer.
Early voting for the Iowa primary began on May 17. Iowa voters must remember to bring an accepted form of identification – like a driver’s license, a non-operator state ID, or a voter PIN card. Local election offices will remain open for early in-person voting through June 6. When you’re ready to return your absentee ballot, it can be taken to the county election office in person, put in a ballot dropbox if your county has one, or returned through the mail to the county auditor. No matter what method you use, your ballot has to be received by the county auditor by 8:00 p-m on June 7.
