(Harlan) Harlan’s four runs in the first two innings ended up being just enough to defeat Atlantic 4-3 in a Hawkeye Ten Conference baseball game at Harlan on Tuesday night.
The Cyclones plated two runs in the first, two in the second, and held off the Trojans late in the game for the win.
Alex Monson went all seven innings for Harlan. The junior right-hander kept the ball down the entire game and allowed three runs on three hits, struck out three, hit two batters, and no walks. Wyatt Redinbaugh went the distance for the Trojans, allowing four runs on 11 hits, struck out five, and walked one Cyclone hitter.
Harlan scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. Isiah Ahrenholz reached base on an error, Luke Musich drew a walk, Alex Monson’s RBI single drove home Arhrenholz, and Musich scored on an error. Freshman third baseman Quinn Koester’s 2 RBI single in the second inning pushed the home team to a 4-1 lead.
Atlantic scored runs in the second, fifth, and seventh innings. Zane Vance scored on a wild pitch in the second inning, scored another run in the sixth on a fielder’s choice, and the Trojans plated their third run in the seventh on Colin Mullenix RBI closed the gap to 4-3 with one out. However, Monson settled back in and retired the next two Trojan batters to seal the deal.
Monson went three-for-three at the plate for the Cyclones with one RBI. Joey Mosier stroked two singles, Cade Sears drilled two hits, and Ben Muenchrath, Kelby Lasher, Quinn Koesters, and Luke Musich each hit to help the cause for the Cyclones, now 4-5 on the season and 3-3 in the Hawkeye Ten Conference.
Bodie Johnson drilled a double, and Colin Mullenix and Wyatt Redinbaugh each singled for the Trojans, now 5-3 on the season and 4-3 in the Hawkeye Ten Conference.
Atlantic travels to Lewis Central on Thursday, and Harlan heads to St. Albert on Thursday.
