(Denison) Grant Sturm scored a season-high 21-points to lead Atlantic to a 64-58 win over Denison-Schleswig in Hawkeye Ten Conference boys’ basketball at Denison on Friday night.
Sturm scored 13 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter. Skyler Handlos scored 15-points, and Ethan Williams finished in double-figures with 12. Dayton Templeton scored 9, Garrett Reynolds 4, and Ethan Sturm chipped in three points.
Atlantic Head Coach Jeff Ebling had this to say after the game.
Carson Seuntjens led all scorers with 30-points, Braiden Heiden finished the night with 12-points, Evan Turin, 7, Carter Wessel, 5, Matthew Weitz, 4, and Aiden Schuttinga chipped in 2. Seuntjens entered the game averaging 3.2 points per game. The 6’0 foot sophomore buried six three-point shots, which was his season total heading into the game against Atlantic.
The Trojans held a 28-23 lead at the break. Atlantic Head Coach Jeff Ebling says the Trojans picked up the tempo early in the game and cashed in on some points off of transition.
The second half was a game of runs. Seuntjens hit back-to-back three-point shots to give the Monarchs a 36-33 lead. Handlos countered with a long-range bomb to tie the game at 36-36. There were multiple lead changes before Ethan Williams knocked down a layup and a free-throw to give the Trojans a 50-47 lead. The Monarchs kept it close, however, Atlantic would never trail again.
Coach Ebling says the key down the stretch was making stops when they needed to.
Atlantic notched their sixth straight win and move to (9-5) overall and (7-1) in conference play. The Trojans and Glenwood are tied for the league lead each with one-loss. Denison-Schleswig falls to (7-11) and (4-5) in conference play.
Atlantic travels to St. Albert on Saturday afternoon. Denison-Schleswig hosts Carroll High.
