(Glenwood) Ryan Blum scored 21-points, and Ben Hughes’s free throws down the stretch lead Glenwood to a 56-48 win over Atlantic in a Boys’ basketball game at Glenwood on Tuesday night.
Craig Alan Becker led Atlantic with a season-high 18-points, and Dayton Templeton added 13.
Blum’s three-point shot with time running out in the first quarter tied the game at 10-10. Craig Alan Becker scored five first-quarter points, and Ethan Williams added four-points out of the gate for the Trojans.
Becker continued his “hot hand” in the second quarter. The Trojans opened up a 26-18 lead, but the home team clicked off a 7-2 run to close the gap to 28-25 at the break.
Both teams played even in the third quarter, with ten points apiece, and the Trojans held a 38-35 lead going into the final frame.
Glenwood turned the tide on the Trojans in the fourth quarter. The Rams drained 12-of-13 free throws and outscored the visitors 21-10 to seal a 56-48 win. Ben Hughes keyed the home team in the final stanza with a perfect six-for-six from the free-throw line. Caden Johnson was three-for-three, Blum went two-for-two, and Silas Bales was one-for-two.
“It came down to execution in the last four minutes,” stated Atlantic Head Coach Jeff Ebling. “I thought our effort for all 32-minutes was phenomenal. Ryan Blum was sensational for Glenwood. We just didn’t make enough plays down the stretch.”
Besides Blum’s 21-points, Ben Hughes scored 10-points, Silas Bales seven, Logyn Echeart and Brock Sell scored four points each, and Tommy Johnson finished the night with two.
Becker and Templeton accounted for 33 of Atlantic’s 48 points. Other scorer’s included; Ethan Williams with eight points, Grant Sturm, four, Ethan Sturm, three-points, and Caden Andersen chipped in two-for the Trojans.
“I thought we played extremely well against a top ten team in Class 3A, and Friday night at Kuemper will be another opportunity for us,” said Ebling. “We have some things we need to work on, but we’re getting closer and closer each game.”
Glenwood extends their record to (6-1). Atlantic falls to (2-4).
The Trojans travel to Kuemper on Friday night. The Rams travel to Shenandoah.
