(Oakland) A home in Oakland was destroyed by fire Tuesday evening.
Oakland Fire Chief Brant Miller told KSOM/KS95 News that they were called to the fire on South Gates Street at 9:40 p.m.
“The crew encountered heavy fire on arrival on the back side of the residence. They initially knocked down the fire on the outside, did a little bit of a transitional attack and went inside to extinguish the fire on the inside and it was shortly after that that a portion of the floor in the kitchen area collapsed and we actually had two firefighters that fell into the basement. They called a mayday immediately; crews were on their way in to get them out of the basement but they were able to self-rescue and got up out of there pretty much on their own fortunately. They were transported to the hospital for evaluation and only suffered minor injuries,” explained Miller.
Miller said one resident and a dog were home at the time of the fire and both got out safely. The home was a total loss.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The Oakland, Carson and Hancock Fire Departments responded to the scene.
