(Audubon) Audubon and Bedford square off in a first-round 8-player football game at Audubon on Friday night. Both teams have experienced unique situations this season and haven’t played in two weeks. The Wheelers return to the gridiron after a two-week layoff because of COViD-19. Bedford sat idle over the last couple of weeks because of opponents of canceling due to virus guidelines.
Audubon Head Coach Sean Birks says the season has impacted a variety of teams in numerous ways. He says the Wheelers sat for two weeks at the wrong time of the season.
The team didn’t put the ball away during their two weekends off. Birks says the players were film rats and excited to get back to action. He is hoping it won’t take long to knock the rust off.
The (5-0) Wheelers take on (0-5) Bedford. Despite the Bulldogs winless record, Birks is impressed with this football team. Coach Birks says the Bulldogs are the best winless team out there.
In just five weeks, the Wheelers have compiled 1,866 total yards of offense, including 1,170 yards rushing and 696 yards passing. Gavin Smith has completed 70-percent of his passes for 584 yards and 13 touchdowns. Smith also leads the Wheeler ground attack with 657 yards on 51 carries and 15 touchdowns.
The Bulldogs have 827 yards of total offense, 570 yards rushing, and 357 yards passing. Dawson Stream and Tristen Cummings are a combined 39/72 passing for 357 yards and four touchdowns. Eli Morris is the leading ball carrier with 332 yards.
