(Pullman, WA) — The Iowa football team rebounded from their loss to Ohio St. in a big way with a 41-24 win at Washington on Friday night.
It was the breakout performance for Jeremy Hecklinski — the Junior transfer got the start for the injured Hank Brown and was 14 of 19 passing for 202 yards and 3 TD. It was an even bigger night for Kamari Moulton as he rushed 26 times for a career high 208 yards and 2 TD. Kuemper Catholic alum DJ Vonnahme had 2 catches for 44 yards and 2 TD.
Iowa improves to 5-1 and 2-1 in the Big Ten while the Huskies fall to 3-3 and 0-3.
Iowa scored the game’s first 27 points on two field goals from Caden Buhr and then Moulton broke a 56 yard TD run. Hecklinski then found Vonnahme for two TD receptions — one from 20 and the other from 24 yards. Washington added a short field goal just before the end of the first half to make it 27-3 at the break.
Washington starting QB Demond Williams Jr. was harassed all night by the Hawkeyes defense and he left the game late in the 2nd quarter and did not return. Iowa had 6 total sacks in the game — Cam Buffington and Preston Ries each had two.
Huskies back up Elijah Brown would throw a 10 yard TD pass to Chris Lawson on the opening drive of the 2nd half but Iowa answered quickly as Hecklinski connected with Reece Vander Zee on a 31 yard TD pass setting up an 8 yard TD pass to Vander Zee to make it 34-10 Iowa.
The teams continued to trade scores as Washington ended an 11 play drive with a 2 yard TD pass from Brown to Dezmen Roebuck. However, Iowa got another drive going — Hecklinski connected with Braeden Jackson on a 33 yard catch and run and Moulton finished it with a 3 yard TD run to make it 41-18. The Huskies added another score late.
