(Des Moines) With hunting seasons right around the corner, now is the time to get hunters safety certified. Iowa law requires that anyone born after January 1, 1972 must be certified in hunter education before they are eligible to purchase an Iowa hunting license.
John Lorenzen with the The Iowa Department of Natural Resources highlights the benefits of hunter education.
The DNR reports an average of eight hunting related injuries and one death every year.
Children 11 years and older can sign up and complete the hybrid course, but the certificate will become valid on their 12th birthday. Hunters 18 and over can complete the certification online. Current field days available can be found on the Iowa DNR website. There is a class coming up on August 1 at the Hitchcock Nature Center in Pottawatomie County from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
