On September 24, 1955, Greg Neil Sornson was born in Audubon, Iowa to Robert and Elaine (Mumgaard) Sornson. Growing up on their farm by Viola Center he was dearly loved by his parents and siblings Judy, Paul, and Jane. Many childhood adventures were had together and they became best friends. Greg began learning his handyman skills working alongside his father and brother on the farm. Early on Greg showed a talent for sports, participating in wrestling, track, cross country, and football and he held the AHS 440-yard dash record for years. During high school, he worked at Louie’s Standard gas station to afford his maroon ’68 Camaro and Yamaha motorcycle. Following graduation with the Audubon High School Class of 1974, he was employed at the Audubon Co-op and spent one summer working for his Uncle John Sornson at Johnny’s Cycle in Nebraska City. Greg then attended Des Moines Area Community College completing the HVAC program which led to employment with Johnson Controls in Omaha. While there, he met Sandy Wilson and together they moved to Tampa, FL, relocating with his job. Greg and Sandy married and welcomed daughters Rachel Leigh in 1986 and Laney Rochelle in 1996. Greg and Sandy later parted, but they remained dedicated parents to their daughters. In 2002 Greg became Operations Manager for Advanced Automation Systems. Before retiring in 2020 he worked for a few years at Lowes. Greg had a close relationship for several years with his companion Verna Snyder before she passed away in 2022. He was known to be a good and loyal family man and friend who was always ready to help anyone in need. One of the greatest joys in Greg’s life, besides being a father to his daughters and his relationship with son-in-law, Chad, was becoming a grandfather to Arlo and Kora. Greg loved his family with all his heart. He was always there for them and they made many special memories together. His Christian faith was a guiding force in his life. He is deeply missed and we will hold him in our hearts forever until we reunite in heaven.
Greg passed away on February 1, 2026, in Tampa. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his daughters Rachel Strong, her husband Chad and children Arlo and Kora; and Laney Sornson, all of the Tampa area; siblings Judy (Richard) Baker, Paul (Deb) Sornson, and Jane (Robert) Weber; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends.
