(Atlantic) Over one million U.S. Children and teens have broken bones and fractured their skulls in bicycle injuries over the past 20 years. Nearly 87 percent of kids with skull fractures were not wearing helmets. Boys aged 10-15 were at the highest risk.
Karla Akers, representing the Kiwanis Club, appeared before the Atlantic City Council on Wednesday evening. Akers says we all have the same problem: road and helmet safety. For the past 31 years, the Kiwanis Club has given bicycle helmets to third graders.
The Kiwanis developed a brochure designed by the Atlantic High School. Akers designed the posters.
Akers asked the City Council what else we can do in Cass County to keep our kids safe?
Akers wanted the Atlantic City Council to know that the Kiwanis is taking a further step to improve its education program. In turn, Akers asked the City Members to share within their organization the lack of helmet usage among bicyclists,
More than 65,000 children suffered injuries involving road vehicles. The investigators found an average of $50,975 fractures annually, and about 71 percent were Male.
