(Iowa City, IA) — The new football season for the University of Iowa starts in less than two months but Iowa has recently added to its incoming recruiting class in 2027. Recently, Bariyus Allen — a defensive lineman from Ohio and Jonathan Harris — a safety from Chicago — have committed to playing for the Hawkeyes.
Allen is a 6’5″ 300 pound lineman from Dayton, OH who only visited Iowa City this past weekend and instantly committed, making his announcement on social media on Monday. Allen chose the Hawkeyes over reported offers from Boston College, Western Kentucky, Miami (OH), Northern Illinois, Ohio U, and Toledo.
Recruiting experts believe that Allen could be an option on the offensive line. As a high school junior at Belmont High School, Allen had 73 tackles and 20.5 tackles for a loss and was named the Defensive Player of the Year by Dayton Public Schools.
Harris is a 6’2″, 175 pound three star safety from Brother Rice High School in the Windy City and chose Iowa over Sacramento St., Missouri St., Western Illinois, Butler and Chicago St.
Harris is a multi-sport athlete — he was a Illinois state qualifier in wrestling. He played both corner and safety for his high school that won the state Class 7A championship.
In addition, Iowa is reportedly pushing hard for another recruit — three star running back Kenyon Norman from West Chester, OH has narrowed his final choices to the Hawkeyes, Northwestern, and Wake Forest and is expected to make his final decision on Friday.
Iowa is scheduled to open fall practice for the 2026 season on July 30.
