(Atlantic) The City of Atlantic Board of Adjustment approved a Conditional Use Permit application submitted by Vision Atlantic, Inc., for property located at 1800 Olive Street, allowing a child development center to operate within the Multiple Family Residential District.
Prior to approval, the Board of Adjustment held a public hearing to consider the application. No individuals attended the hearing in opposition to the proposal.
Vision Atlantic President Christina Bateman told the board that data shows Cass County was short 1,184 child care spaces in 2023.
The new child development center will accommodate up to 300 children and provide child care, before- and after-school care, summer care, and preschool services. The current preschool classrooms at the YMCA’s Jack & Jill Preschool will relocate to the new facility.
Bateman said permits are currently being processed through the State of Iowa, with construction tentatively planned to begin this fall.
The Board of Adjustment reviewed the seven standards required for approval of the permit and found no concerns.
The board approved the Conditional Use Permit unanimously, with Melissa Ihnen abstaining because she serves on the Vision Atlantic board.
