(Des Moines) Strong storms ripped through west central Iowa on Wednesday, dropping large hail and causing significant damage in Crawford and Carroll Counties. Brooke Hagenhoff with the National Weather Service in Des Moines says the large hail formed from a strong cell moving through the area. Hagenhoff says the storm dropped hail ranging from golf ball to tennis ball size in southern Crawford and Central Carroll County.
Hagenhoff says today will be much calmer, but that break won’t last long. She says another round of strong-to-severe thunderstorms will form tomorrow afternoon along a strong cold front moving across the area. She says damaging winds and tornadoes are the main concern, with large hail and possible flooding also posing additional risks. Hagenhoff says the storms will develop in western Iowa on Friday afternoon.
Hagenhoff says much colder weather will appear behind the cold front, with freezing temperatures forecast for Saturday night.
