(Oakland, IA) — In a game between two of the top runners in the state of Iowa, it was Beau Burns of BGM who scored 5 touchdowns to lead the Bears over Riverside 35-30 in the first round of the Class A playoffs on Friday night.
Burns took the Bears down the field on the opening drive of the game and scored from 6 yards out to take a 7-0 lead.
Riverside answered quickly as QB Landyn Schoenrock surprised everybody by faking it to Jaxon Gordon and going 69 yards for a TD to tie the game at 7-7.
BGM was stuffed on their next drive but the Bulldogs went 3 and out and the Bears took over near midfield at the start of the 2nd quarter and Burns broke one for a 55 yard TD to take a 14-7 lead.
Gordon answered just 16 seconds later with a 51 yard TD run to tie the game 14-14.
After BGM punted, Riverside started at their own 9 but Schoenrock converted a 3rd and 10 with a 28 yard run but the drive stalled and the Bulldogs got a 34 yard field goal from Peyton Amdor to take a 17-14 lead with 2:21 left.
That was enough time for BGM to drive down the field quickly and Burns got a snap off just as the clock ticked to 0:00 and plunged 2 yards into the end zone and the Bears led 21-17 at the half.
Riverside had the ball first in the second half and on 3rd and 9, Schoenrock found Peyton Amdor on a screen pass across the middle and he raced 58 yards for the TD to retake the lead 24-21.
BGM tried a screen pass on their next possession but Uriah Reed stepped in front of the receiver and picked off the pass and raced down to the BGM 10. However, on the next play, Gordon fumbled it right back to the Bears. Burns would break a 69 yard run to set up a 5 yard TD run and BGM was back in front 28-24.
Burns added another TD run with 8:58 left in the game to make it a two score lead 35-24. Gordon would find the end zone again on a 39 yard TD run to cut the lead to 5 but BGM would never give the ball back and ran out the clock.
