(Des Moines) – The Polk County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single-vehicle crash on southbound Highway 65 at NE 112th Street early this morning.
According to the report, a pickup truck veered into a ditch, resulting in a fire under the vehicle. Witnesses at the scene were able to extract the sole occupant, an adult male driver, who was unconscious when they reached him. Deputies, along with fire and rescue teams from Mitchellville and Bondurant, began life-saving measures.
The victim was airlifted to a local hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. The fire department extinguished the vehicle fire, and both southbound lanes of Highway 65 have since reopened to traffic.
Polk County Traffic Investigators are currently collecting evidence and witness statements to determine the cause of the accident. No further details are available at this time.
