(Shenandoah) The Harlan and Glenwood girls, and Red Oak boys are considered the favorites in the Hawkeye Ten Conference Cross Country Meet this afternoon at the Shenandoah High School Cross Country Course.
The Harlan girls are ranked #15 in Class 3A according to the latest from the Iowa Track Coaches Association Rankings
Atlantic Head Coach Dan Vargason expects a competitive race featuring many quality teams. Vargason says Harlan is the favorite to win the girls’ side, with Glenwood, Lewis Central, and Atlantic also figuring into the mix.
The girls’ race features top-ranked Lili Denton of St. Albert, defending Class 1A State Champion last year, and three-time State Track Champion this past spring. The field also features Class 3A 8th-ranked Grace Berglund, of Glenwood, 11th-ranked Ashlyn Rau of Harlan, Class 4A 18th-ranked Madelyn Hoss of Lewis Central, 27th-ranked in Class 2A, Ava O’Rourke of Shenandoah, and teammate and 29th-ranked Julia Heslink.
Red Oak, 7th-ranked in Class 2A, enters the meet as the favorite, led by 3rd-rated Emmanuel Grass and 17th-ranked Hayden Heitbrink. Jeffrey Gross of Harlan, ranked 18th in Class 3A, will figure into the mix, along with 22nd-ranked Mason Sells of Shenandoah, and 25th-rated Mason Betts of Atlantic.
Coach Vargason points to Red Oak as the team to beat on the boys’ side. He says Lewis Central and Shenandoah have been running well. Vargason says Mason Betts will be right in there, pushing the pace individually for Atlantic.
