(Corning) The Adams County Historic Preservation Commission will host a special series of exhibits honoring Veterans of World War I, opening Friday, October 17, at 10:00 a.m. The event will include an Ambassador Salute and Chamber Coffee at 11:00 a.m. at 615 Davis Avenue in Corning.
The exhibition features World War I: Lessons and Legacies from the Smithsonian Institution, which explores “the war to end all wars” and its lasting impact on American life and identity. Also included is World War I: The Honor Roll from the State Historical Society of Iowa, showcasing more than 4,000 names and photos of Iowans from all 99 counties who lost their lives in the conflict. The collection began in 1920 and was expanded in 2017 during the war’s centennial, serving as a powerful tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
In addition, World War I: The Doughboys of Adams County—developed by the Adams County Historic Preservation Commission—will highlight the stories and service records of local soldiers and sailors with ties to the county.
On Thursday, November 6, Humanities Iowa and the Preservation Commission will welcome Michael Vogt, curator of the Gold Star Military Museum at Camp Dodge, for two presentations titled Camp Dodge: Home Away from Home 1917–1918. Vogt will discuss how Camp Dodge became one of 16 national training camps for draftees during the war, transforming into the largest military base in Iowa’s history. From September 1917 through November 1918, more than 37,000 Iowa draftees trained there before serving overseas.
The first presentation will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the Southwest Valley High School Auditorium, 904 8th Street in Corning, followed by a second program at 7:00 p.m. at the Corning Community Center, 601 6th Street. The exhibits will be open that day from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The World War I exhibits will be available for public viewing each Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 4:00 p.m., October 17 through November 9. Additional hours will be offered Monday, November 10, and on Veterans Day, November 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
All exhibits and presentations are free and open to the public.
